The Mavericks are getting closer to a trade with the Washington Wizards for Caron Butler and perhaps center Brendan Haywood, an NBA source said this afternoon.
The Mavericks have been weighing a move with the Wizards for weeks, but have been inclined to wait and see what else might come up at the trade deadline, which is Thursday.
If the Mavericks were to acquire Butler, it would mean they are taking on salary for this season and 2010-11. If Haywood is involved, he would become a free agent this summer.
The source indicated that the talks were increasing and described the situation as being close to a deal. However, both sides have been talking to other teams, as well and could be using this to stoke the conversation with other clubs.
