Von Wafer was at the Mavericks' shoootaround. Not present was Jake Voskuhl or Mikki Moore.
The real need for the Mavericks right now is a big man who can contribute six minutes and six fouls, especially tonight against the long, physical Lakers. Voskuhl knows the Mavericks' system after going through training camp. Moore has been with so many NBA teams, any system is a fit for him.
There appears to be a level of patience for Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson regarding a big man. But really, we're only talking 15 days or so until Erick Dampier can return.
Instead, they signed the 6-5 Wafer to a 10-day contract.
"I'm just happy to be back in the NBA,'' Wafer said. "If it's for 10 days, fine. If it's for 20 days, fine. I'm just going to try to do what I can to help and try to get better.''
Wafer said his back, which acted up on him last season, is fine.
"It's not a big issue,'' he said. "I had a little trouble with it in the playoffs last season, but I didn't miss any games.''
