Word out of Chicago and the predraft camp is that the Atlanta Hawks may be close to hiring Mavericks' assistant Dwane Casey.
No deal is done, but the Hawks and Casey met again in Chicago and signs are pointing toward the former Minnesota head coach being the leading candidate for the Hawks.
It would be a terrific hire by the Hawks. Casey was rock solid in his coaching stint with the Wolves. He had a great relationship with Kevin Garnett and is widely respected around the league.
What his hiring would do is leave the Mavericks with a void on Rick Carlisle's staff.
Casey most likely would take a member or two off the Mavericks' staff to be with him in Atlanta.
The Mavericks have been preparing for this situation. They knew when Carlisle hired Casey and Terry Stotts, also a former head coach, as his assistants that they would be hot commodities for head-coaching jobs at some point.
