Donnie Nelson just had a chat with the media and he made it
clear he is not leaving for Germany this afternoon to do anything other than
succeed in the re-signing of Dirk Nowitzki.
“It will get done,’’ he said. “I’ll
stay over there as long as it takes.’’
The reason is that the Mavericks cannot move forward with
their free-agent plans for outside players without knowing that Dirk is going
to be in Dallas.
“There is no mix if there’s no Dirk in the mix,’’
he said.
Nelson, the team president, also said that he’s aware
that Nowitzki tonight becomes an unrestricted free agent and, if he so desired,
could go anywhere in the NBA.
And if that happened?
“If Dirk doesn’t stay, our whole world changes,’’
Nelson said.
That’s why it’s important enough to catch a
flight today that will land him in Germany early tomorrow morning and put him
on Dirk’s doorstep by mid-morning, German time.
