It cannot be overstated enough that this draft was important
not only for the first-round pick that dropped into the Mavericks’ lap,
but for the fact that they didn’t have to touch any future assets.
Mainly, they still have all their first-round picks going
forward, and even added a 2013 second-rounder for their No. 50 pick.
“Our powder is still dry,’’ Donnie Nelson
said. “We didn’t want to encumber our first-round draft picks going
forward. If we have a deal where we need to trade three first-round picks, we
can.’’
In other words, the Mavericks are alive and kicking in the
free-agent frenzy that will open next week.
Also, the drafting of Dominique Jones is interesting because
Jones said he’s never been to Texas, but that he does have a friend here.
Cowboys’ safety Mike Jenkins also went to South
Florida and Jones and Jenkins have been friends since Jones got to South
Florida in 2007.
