The recent moves they’ve made have shuffled the deck
chairs, but it’s hardly cause for unbridled optimism.
That’s why asking the questions about a 48-win season
are intriguing.
You see, that’s the record the Mavericks would have to
get to bring the franchise’s record back to dead-level .500.
They are 1,207-1,221 after 30 seasons – that’s
29 seasons of 82 games and one lockout-shortened season of 50 games.
It’s amazing how good the Mavericks have been in the
last 10 regular seasons and yet they still haven’t gotten back to the
peak of mediocrity thanks to that incredibly bad run during the ‘90s.
In the big picture, getting back to .500 for franchise
history is not a big deal.
But the way the Mavericks are constructed right now, it’s
questionable whether they can get those 48 wins.

You're kidding, right? When was the last time Dirk DIDN'T win 50 games, let alone 48? When he was a teen-aged rookie still adjusting to the NBA. When was the last time sub-50 was even in question? When he was surrounded by defensive stalwarts Antoine Walker and Antawn Jamison in the front court.
