There’s no way to analyze LeBron James’
free-agent follies without coming to the simple conclusion that he has
cheapened his legacy, no matter what.
Championships won’t even define him in the final
picture. It’ll be the fact that he chased a title rather than gutting out
his situation and earning it on his own.
Michael Jordan will forever be the standard in this regard. He
labored through a lot of seasons in Chicago before he and management found the
right formula for a championship. And then they came in waves.
Kobe Bryant stuck it out in LA with the Lakers, although he
had more help all along than Jordan did. He still spent all his time with one
franchise and slowly helped build it into a winner.
James has forfeited the right to be on those two’s
You can’t blame James for doing what he did. He knows
this is a terrific opportunity to get not just a ring, but many rings. However,
this route comes at a cost. And it’s fair to say that James simply doesn’t
possess the toughness and the willingness to persevere that the other greats
before him have had.
