As the bumping and grinding progressed into pushing and
shoving between J.J. Barea and Baron Davis, the Mavericks’ backup guard
knew what he had to do.
He was guarding Davis close on one play when he got called for
a foul and Davis didn’t appreciate the close quarters Barea was keeping.
“On the next play, I got closer because I knew he was
going to hit me again,’’ Barea said.
The ploy worked. Davis gave Barea a pretty rugged forearm and
was called for an offensive foul. It was the sort of play that makes a coach
proud of his player, especially when that player is one of the smallest in the
league.
