DALLAS _ Rick Carlisle remembers back in 1998 when he was an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers under Larry Bird, when the two men were marveling at a player on film.
The player was Dirk Nowitzki.
“There was this one high school film that circulated,’’ Carlisle said Sunday. “It was some kind of an All-Star game that he was in with Al Harrington and Rashard Lewis.
“I just remember watching it with Larry Bird and Larry said this guy is going to be an unbelievable player just because of how he moved, his size, how he ran, his ability to shoot the ball, he had a good feel for the game.
“You knew he could be a game-changing type guy. Back then we all thought he was going to be a tremendous player.’’
