DALLAS _ Apparently, Phoenix Suns coach Alvin Gentry is a huge Dirk Nowitzki fan.
At this morning’s shoot around at American Airlines Center, Gentry was asked his assessment of the Mavs’ slow 2-4 start, and he didn’t waste time getting around to talking about coach Rick Carlisle’s No. 1 offensive weapon.
“Hey, they’ve got Dirk,’’ Gentry said. “As long as they’ve got Dirk, they’ve got a chance.
“You look at him and what he’s done and where his game is, he’s an amazing player. He’s really arguably the toughest matchup of any player in the NBA, because of his size and his shooting ability. When he added the post-up game to his game, it makes it virtually impossible (to contain him).’’
The Suns will attempt to contain Nowitzki when the Mavs host Phoenix at 7:30 tonight. But getting Nowitzki -- he will play in his 1,000th career NBA game tonight -- off his game is no small chore.
“You play a big guy on him, he takes him outside,’’ Gentry said. “You play a smaller guy, he posts him up.
“So, he’s a great guy to have around. I’m sure Rick appreciates him.’’
