NEW YORK -- To a man, nearly everyone thought the Dallas Mavericks would fall completely apart on defense this season after they lost Tyson Chandler to the New York Knicks via free agency.
But the Mavs are curently ranked first in the NBA in field goal percentage allowed (41.4 percent), tied for second in assists allowed (18.8 per game), and are fifth in scoring defense (90.8 points per game). Thus, those cries by Mavs fans who misses Chandler's tenacity and hard work are not as vocal as they were earlier ihe season.
"Obviously they have a good system and they do a heckuva job,'' D'Antoni said. "I haven't seen their numbers yet, but they play well and smart, because you know what, they're all veterans.
"And that's a big deal in this league. As you get older, you get smart, you play better defense. On the rotation, you don't hesitate. It's all off reactions.''
