PHILADELPHIA -- For a spectacular half Friday night at Wells Fargo Center, Dirk Nowitzki was so efficient that he tallied as many points in the second half as the entire Philadelphia 76ers team.
Nowitzki poured in 24 of his 28 points in the second half on 8-of-11 shooting. By contrast, the Sixers converted 9-of-42 shots in the second half when they also scored 24 points.
It was one of the most amazing offensive showings by Nowitzki in a half, which also included a very dominating defensive performance by the Mavs.
"The key to the game was our defense,'' coach Rick Carlisle said. "We only allowed 24 points in the second half, which is a phenomenal job defensively
"They missed some shots, but our guys were into it. We are a defense-first team.''
Nowitzki said he was fueled to take charge of the scoring load in the second half because Jason Terry missed Friday's game due to personal reasons.
"I had a couple jabs and face-ups (in the first half), I had a three that went in and out, so it was a frustrating half,'' Nowitzki said of the first half, when he was 2-of-11 from the field. "But I knew in the second half I was going to come out and keep firing, especially with Jet out, and I'm glad they went in.''
