The Brooklyn Nets just acquired All-Star forward guard/forward Joe Johnson from the Atlanta Hawks.
And, depending on how it's viewed, that could be good news for the Dallas Mavericks in their quest to land Nets free agent point guard Deron Williams.
The addition of Johnson all but puts the Nets out of the running for Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, who told his team that he only wanted to be traded to the Nets. The Magic doesn't want to have any dealings with the Nets in regards to Howard.
And even if the Magic traded Howard to the Nets, he would have to take considerable less money than his talent suggests.
Williams will decide between playing for the Mavs or Nets. That means he'll be deciding between having the MVP of the 2011 Finals in 34-year old Dirk Nowitzki as his teammate, or 31-year old Joe Johnson -- he's never gotten out of the second round of the playoffs -- as his teammate.
