DALLAS --- Can a case be made that Donnie Nelson should be a strong candidate for NBA Executive of the Year for the upcoming season?
Remember, the Dallas Mavericks' general manager rebounded nicely recently after losing out on the Deron Williams Sweepstakes, and losing Jason Terry and Jason Kidd to free agency. Nelson and the Mavs recovered by acquiring guards O.J. Mayo, Darren Collison and Dahntay Jones, forward Elton Brand and center Chris Kaman.
While Mayo, Kaman and Collison could all end up in the starting lineup next season, Nelson doesn't want any part of any Executive of the Year awards.
"Don’t even say that -- I loathe that,'' Nelson said. "That’s akin to being on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
"Usually what happens when you get that award is you’re gone the next year. I would just assume be in the background. I like it back there.''
