DALLAS -– Dallas Mavericks guard Delonte West likes the solid connection coach Rick Carlisle has with his players.
“He’s documented and been through from the bottom dealing with teams and franchises in the worst light it possibly could be, to winning the championship and everything in between,’’ West said. “And he was a player himself, and he just gets it.’’
Carlisle was the coach of the Indiana Pacers when, on Nov. 19, 2004, Pacers forward Ron Artest went into the stands at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Mich. – the Detroit Pistons’ home court – and fought with a fan. Several other players were involved in what became one of the ugliest brawls in NBA history.
Fast-forward to June of 2011, and Carlisle was the coach who led the Mavs to their only NBA championship.
