LOS ANGELES -- The way newly-minted point guard Mike James sees it, he should have an easy time directing the Dallas Mavericks' offense.
James, who signed a 10-day contract with the Mavs on Tuesday, looked around and saw a lot of talent at his disposal. Talent that he thinks he can use to help turn the Mavs into winners, and into a team that can possibly collect yet another playoff berth.
"They've got all the positions (covered),'' James said Tuesday. "They’ve got a good big man (in Chris Kaman), they’ve got a great power forward (in Dirk Nowitzki), Elton Brand is here, and the three’s with Vince (Carter).
"The team is a good team. It’s a good veteran team with a mix of young guys, and I think I can come in and just be able to help with my leadership more than anything else.''
James acknowledged that with a little guidance, the Mavs (13-22) could be well on their way towards putting this nightmarish season behind them.
"I don’t really have to do much,'' James said. "All I've got to do is just play my role and play my
position.
"And so that’s what I plan on doing is just being a point guard, which I’ve done for my whole career.''
