AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- OJ Mayo scored 22 points Friday night to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 102-99 victory over the Detroit Pistons at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
The game was the opener of a four-game road trip for the Mavs, who increased their record to 28-33 after winning their second straight game.
Darren Collison hit a pair of free throws with 3.8 seconds left to put the Mavs up 102-99. Detroit's Charlie Villanueva then missed a wide open game-tying three-poiner at the buzzer.
Besdies Mayo, the Mavs got 14 points from Brandan Wright, 12 apiece from Dirk Nowitzki and Mike James, 11 from Collison and 10 from Vince Carter.
The Mavs appeared to be well on their way to putting the game away earlier when they led 88-73 with 9:43 remaining in the game. Then they had to sweat it out at the end.
