DALLAS -- Mulitple reports have indicated that the Dallas Mavericks are in talks with Boston to pursue Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo. A source close to the situation also told the Star-Telegram as such.
But the source said that no deal involving Rondo will occur until after the Mavs acquire soon-to-be-free agent center Dwight Howard. That's because of salary cap ramifications.
The first step to getting Rhondo in Dallas is getting Howard in Dallas.
Howard, the Los Angeles Laker center who will be a free agent on Monday, has reportedly narrowed his free agent destinations down to the Mavs and Houston Rockets. But the Lakers are still in the mix, too.
The Rockets are slated to be the first to meet with Howard -- according to reports -- as soon as the clock strike 11:01 p.m. CDT on Sunday. After that, the Mavs will get their shot at trying to convince Howard that Dallas is the best place for him to continue his basketball career.
For the Mavs fans thinking of a Big 3 of Dirk Nowitzki, Howard and Rondo, it's not totally out of the realm of possibility. But a lot of work has to be done before it gets to that stage.
So hold on. This promises to be one of the wildest weeks in Mavs history.
