DALLAS -- The Dallas Mavericks gambled and lost.
In order to round up enough money without taking a salary cap hit so they could sign free agent shooting guard Monta Ellis, the Mavs reluctantly exposed shooting guard Josh Akognon to the waiver wire. But before Akognon could clear waivers, he was claimed Wednesday and signed to a one-year non-guaranteed contract by the Memphis Grizzlies.
Akognon was the Mavs' leading scorer in last week's Las Vegas Summer League with 17.5 points in 26.2 minutes per game. In those six games in Vegas, Akognon shot 41.8 percent from the field, including a team-high 39.1 percent from three-point range.
Akognon had a non-guaranteed contract with the Mavs that would pay him $788,872 next season before they placed him on waivers.
