LAS VEGAS -- Count Monte Mathis among those who were impressed with the way Israel rookie Gal Mekel handled himself and ran the Dallas Mavericks' offense during Saturday's 76-73 triumph over the Sacramento Kings.
"He did a good job,'' said Mathis, the Mavs' summer league head coach. "He’s really smart in pick-and-roll situations.''
Mekel started at the game at point guard, tallied 14 points, grabbed four rebounds, handed out four assists, committed three turnovers and was 5-of-10 from the field.
"He only made a couple of mistakes, a couple of ill-advised passes,'' Mathis said. "But for the most part he does a great job of running the team, getting guys where they’re supposed to get, and control like a coach on the floor basically.''
Mavs head coach Rick Carlisle believes Mekel will improve with time.
"I thought he did OK,'' Carlisle said. "I think he’ll do better and better as he adjusts to the different levels of quickness and athleticism, and adjusts to the different rules and spacing.''
