LAS VEGAS -- The Dallas Mavericks were looking to shock the world Thursday night at the Las Vegas Summer League when they took on the top-seeded Golden State Warriors.
And they came very close to doing exactly that.
The Mavs led the Warriors, 70-56, with 7:02 remaining in the game. But the Mavs wilted under the heat of the Warriors' defensive pressure and wound up losing, 77-76, at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Dallas (2-3) will now play the Chicago Bulls at 9 p.m. CDT Friday night at the COX Pavilion.
The Warriors ended the game on a 20-9 run and won a summer league game for the 11th straight time.
Justin Demton led the Mavs with 19 points, Jackie Carmichael had 12 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks.
After taking control early in the fourth period, the Mavs appeared to be well on their way to an easy victory. A basket by Justin Dentmon pushed the Mavs ahead, 70-56, with 7:02 left.
The Warriors used a 17-4 run to climb within 74-73 with 1:13 left. However, Jackie Carmichael nailed a jumper in the paint with 49.5 seconds to give the Mavs a little breathing room.
But the Warriors' Cameron Jones got the game-winner on a dunk with 10.2 seconds left gave Golden State a 77-76 lead.
