DALLAS -- To be frank, DeJuan Blair's lack of height works against him when he's asked to guard someone the caliber of Indiana center Roy Hibbert, who, at 7-2, is eight inches taller than Blair.
That's the dire situation Blair found himself faced with Friday night when the Mavs lost to Hibbert and the Pacers, 98-77, in the preseason finale for both teams.
In addition to being just 6-6, Blair also is 30 pounds lighter than Hibbert.
Advantage Hibbert. Big-time advantage.
"I’m talking to him every day about the things that we need him to do to help us at that spot,'' coach Rick Carlisle said of Blair. "We need him to be physical, we need him to rebound efficiently, we need him to be an active helper defensively and present his body in help situations.''
Blair played just 16 minutes Friday and finished with nine points, two rebounds and one steal while converting 4-of-5 shots. But the Mavs were a minus-29 when Blair was the floor as the backup center to the foul-plagued Samuel Dalembert.
