DALLAS -- At first glance, those 24 turnovers Isreal rookie point guard Gal Mekel has commited in the first seven preseason games looks very detrimental to someone trusted to run the Dallas Mavericks' offense.
But big picture-wise, coach Rick Carlisle believes Mekel's inability to protect the basketbal may turn out to work in the backup playmaker's favor in the long run.
"I would guess that this three weeks of basketball, he’s learned more in this three-week period of time probably than he’s ever has in his life,'' Carlisle said after Thursday's practice at American Airlines Center. "Just because the game is so different and so new, and the athletes are so much quicker and faster.
"If you look at the stats he’s got a lot of turnovers. But he's made big improvements and I just see him getting better and better.''
