DALLAS -- Guard Monta Ellis made a terrific debut in a Dallas Mavericks' uniform Wednesday night and helped his new team emerge with a 118-109 victory over the Atlanta Hawks in the season opener for both teams at American Airlines Center.
Although he turned the ball over seven times, Ellis scored 32 points and handed out eight assists as the Mavs got out of the gate in the 2013-'14 season on a positive note. Ellis converted 11-of-17 shots, including 2-of-3 three-pointers.
Also for the Mavs, Dirk Nowitzki had 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting, Vince Carter scored 21 on 9-of-16 shooting, and Shawn Marion finished with 12 points and eight boards.
The Mavs shot 57.1 percent from the field and handed out 31 assists on their 44 field goals.
Jeff Teague led the Hawks with 24 points, Paul Millsap scored 20 and Cartier Martin tallied 17.
The Mavs play at Houston on Friday and back home against Memphis on Saturday.
