DALLAS -- Gal Mekel wanted to come out of his first NBA training camp at least as the backup point guard for the Dallas Mavericks.
"First, that was my realistic goal,'' the rookie from Israel said. "After summer league and starting the (training) camp, I'm happy with where I'm standing right now.''
With injuries to Devin Harris (toe) and rookie Shane Larkin (ankle), Mekel will enter Wednesday's regular season opener against the Atlanta Hawks as the backup point guard to Jose Calderon.
The Mavs (4-3) conclude preseason play at 7:30 tonight at American Airlines Center against the Indiana Pacers (2-5). Mekel, meanwhile, is anxious for the regular season to begin.
"Until now the preseason is the previews to the real movie,'' he said. "The real movies start on Wednesday.
"We have another one today to see where we stand. I'm really excited and looking forward for Wednesday.''
