IRVING -- Dirk Nowitzki is one the best players to ever play in the National Basketball Association. But he probably won't be adding the game of golf as a sport he'll play regularly on the side.
"You hit a few shots and you say, ‘I think I can really do this,’ '' Nowitzki said while he and the Mavs players and coaches played Thursday at the Mavs Masters at the Hackberry Creek Country Club. "And then the next 10 are sliced, hooked and in the waters.
"It’s a hard sport, especially if you only play once a year. The last time I played was last year at the Mavs Masters.''
Nowitzki was an accomplished tennis player during his teenage years before he gave it up to concentrate on basketball. Golf, though, is a completely different animal for the 7-footer from Germany.
"The golf ball is one of the hardest things to hit,'' Nowitzki said. "I hit the ball OK, but I just can't control it down the middle -- that’s the hardest part.
"But it’s a fun day. You get to meet the sponsors, they support us obviously throughout the year, so this is a nice event for them for sure.''
