MEMPHIS -- The Dallas Mavericks are rallying around point guard Gal Mekel.
During this past Monday's 94-92 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, the rookie from Isreal turned the ball over five times. The Mavs just don't want Mekel to think too much about the turnovers and let the mistakes creep into the next game, which is tonight at 7 against the Memphis Grizzlies at FedEx Forum.
"We've all being helping him out,'' center Brandan Wright said. "It was his first NBA game.
"He hadn’t really played against real NBA players until that night. Summer league is an
extension probably of the D-League and overseas type of thing, but he got a first taste of it.''
Coach Rick Carlisle noted that tonight will be a really tough challenge for Mekel because the Grizzlies' backcourt consist of ball-hawkers Mike Conley Jr. and Tony Allen.
"The guys starting the game tonight for them – I don’t want to insult anybody else — but I think these two guys are as good a defensive guards as there are in the game,'' Carlisle said. "It’ll be good for (Mekel), it's good for our team coming off a 28 turnover night to see if we can be ball tough and hang
onto it tonight and throw it to the blue shirts instead of the other ones.''
