DALLAS -- Dallas Mavericks point guard Gal Mekel opened the preseason portion of his rookie season last week by going against New Orleans' Jrue Holiday and Memphis' Mike Conley Jr.
Now he has to contend with Orlando's Jameer Nelson.
All three of the aforementioned point guards are among the best the NBA has to offer. And that doesn't bode well for Mekel, who is simply trying to get his feet wet in the NBA after starring overseas in Israel.
"It’s a murder's row in this league,'' coach Rick Carlisle said. "You’re going to come up against guys every night that are really good at playing their game.
"Jameer Nelson is a great pick-and-roll player, potent three-point player and a good penetrator. Gal’s going to have his hands full, but we’ll have help for him.''
Mekel, who commiited nine turnovers in the first two games, is in the Mavs' starting lineup because of injuries to point guards Jose Calderon (hamstring), Devin Harris (toe) and rookie Shane Larkin (ankle).
The Mavs (1-1) host Orlando (0-2) Monday at 7:30 p.m. at American Airlines Center.
