HOUSTON -- Dirk Nowitzki had his regular preseason "rest'' game Saturday against the Charlotte Bobcats. So he wasn't in uniform when point guard Jose Calderon finally made his debut for the Dallas Mavericks.
Calderon was extremely impressive, finishing with 13 points, five assists and no turnovers as the Mavs held off the Bobcats, 89-83. His performance made Nowitzki all smiles.
"We already saw what he brings to the team (Saturday),'' Nowitzki said after Sunday's practice at the University of Houston. "He’s experienced, he controls the game, his shot-making is great and he puts the guys in the right spot.
"He communicates a lot with everybody. He’s got the game under control and his experience will help us in a lot of close games.''
Also, Nowitzki noted that the Mavs have yet to see him, Monta Ellis and Calderon on the court at the same time. That could finally happen Monday at 7 when the Mavs (3-2) clash with the Houston Rockets (3-1) at the Toyota Center.
Nowitzki said: "I'm looking forward to playing with these two guys and seeing how we can shape up.''
