DALLAS -- One of the intangibles Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki likes about Jose Calderon is that the team's newest point guard has a high basketball IQ.
"Obviously he’s a veteran, he’s been around,'' Nowitzki said after Friday's 98-77 loss to Indiana. "He knows the plays already better than some guys that’s been here for years, so he's a smart guy.
"He picked (the plays) up pretty good.''
Nowitzki also believes Calderon is trying to hard to fit in with his new team and needs to be more selfish when it comes to looking for his own shot.
"To me he needs to be even more aggressive coming off those screen-and-rolls,'' Nowitzki said. "I would live with him shooting those pullup 17-, 16-footers -- that’s money in
"I told him a bunch of times (Friday), just keep firing. He’s one of the best shooters we’ve got out there. I think he’s trying too hard to run the team, but we need him to score, especially if it’s there.''
