DALLAS -- Samuel Dalembert apologized to his Dallas Mavericks' teammates for missing Monday morning's shootaround at American Airlines Center.
The Mavs' starting center said he overslept and didn't wake up in time for the 10 a.m. shootaround.
"I'm very disappointed in myself -- I don't have an excuse,'' Dalembert said. "I'm very upset.
"It shouldn't have happen. I'm still trying to get over it.''
Coach Rick Carlisle benched Dalembert at the start of Monday's game against Denver. DeJuan Blair started the 110-96 loss to the Nuggets and played the first six minutes before incurring two fouls.
Bernard James played the next six minutes and committed two turnovers before giving way to Dalembert, who started the second quarter and finished with a season-low two points, a season-low tying three rebounds and two blocks in 18 minutes.
“Sam missed shootaround (Monday) morning because he overslept,’’ Carlisle said. “So the two guys that were there got the first two rotations, and then he played after that.’’
Dalembert, who is playing with bruised ribs on the right side of his body, had no problems with being demoted by Carlisle. He understood the punishment.
"I deserve the decision the coach and the organization made for me,'' Dalembert said. "I'm 100 percent behind him.
"I apologized to my teammates."
Forward Dirk Nowitzki, who passed Kevin Garnett on Monday to become the NBA's No. 14 all-time leading scorer, said all is forgiven when it comes to Dalembert.
"He apologized to the team and that's about it,'' Nowitzki said. "We all make mistakes -- I've been late to shootaround before.
"I actually forgot we had a shootaround, so it is what it is. As long as it doesn't happen every other day. We move forward as a team, but we've still got to be ready defensively, whoever is out there.''
Dalembert said he'll do whatever it takes to get his spot back in the starting lineup.
"We're on a misison and there's a bigger goal for us,'' Dalembert said. "The goal is to get there, everybody has to be accountable and do their part.
"I've already talked to coach, I talked to everybody, and what do we have to do to get back to where we supposed to be, where we belong as a good team. I'm going to have to build the confidence -- I'm going to have to build that back up again -- and that's what I'm going to have to do, and I think that's fair.''
