DALLAS -- ESPN NBA analyst George Karl has the Dallas Mavericks, Portland Trail Blazers and Minnesota Timberwolves battling for the numbers seventh and eighth spots in this season's Western Conference playoff race.
More importantly from Dallas' standpoint, Karl likes the way the Mavs (7-4) are playing entering Wednesday's home game against the Houston Rockets, which will be televised nationally on ESPN.
"An injury could happen or a team could get hot, but right now I have Dallas, Portland and Minnesota -- and two of them are going to make (the playoffs),'' Karl said Tuesday. "A month from now Denver might move up into that scenario.
"A month from now the (Los Angeles) Lakers -- when Kobe (Bryant) comes back and they win nine out of 10 -- they might jump into the fray. But the first exhibition season and the first 10 games, I think Dallas has shown me already that they’re moving in a good direction.’’
