HOUSTON -- Two games in this young NBA season are in the books and the Dallas Mavericks are right back where they finished last season.
With a .500 record.
James Harden poured in 34 points, and Dwight Howard added 13 points and 16 rebounds to lead Houston to a 113-105 victory over the Mavs before a sellout crowd of 18,142 Friday night at the Toyota Center.
The Mavs (1-) will next host the Memphis Grizzlies at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at American Airlines Center.
The Rockets were in control for most of Friday's game, leading by as much as 22 points -- 53-31 --with 5:53 left in the second period. But the Mavs came storming back and got within 76-70 with 2:59 to go in the third quarter following a put-back bucket by Dirk Nowitzki.
However, it was mostly all Rockets from there. Especially when Nowitkzi fouled out with 6:11 left in the game and the Mavs trailing 96-83.
Nowitzki finished with 22 points, but played only 29 minutes because of foul problems. Also for the Mavs, Monta Ellis had 20 points on 7-of-19 shooting, Jae Crowder poured in 15 points, DeJuan Blair collected 11 points and 10 boards, and rookie Gal Mekel had 11 points.
Also for the Rockets, Jeremy Lin tallied 14 points, Aaron Brook had 13, and Omri Casspi collected 12 points. In addition, Omer Asik finished with six points and 12 rebounds before fouling out with 10:03 remaining in the game.
