MILWAUKEE -- In a showdown of two guys who basically traded places this season, Milwaukee Bucks guard OJ Mayo outdueled Dallas Mavericks guard Monta Ellis.
But it was Ellis' team who got the victory Saturday night at the Bradley Center as the Mavs captured their first road win of the season, 91-83, over the Bucks.
This was the finale of a three-game road trip for the Mavs.
The Mavs (4-3) now return home to play just one game -- Tuesday against Washington -- before hitting the road again on a Florida swing to Miami on Friday and Orlando next Saturday.
Last year Mayo played for the Mavs, while Ellis played for the Bucks. But both players entered free agency after the season and wound up basically replacing one another.
In Saturday's game Mayo had a critical mistake when he turned the ball over with two minutes left and the Bucks behind 85-81. On the ensuing possession, Dirk Nowitzki drained a jumper to put the Mavs up 87-81 with 1:40 to go.
Shortly thereafter, Ellis popped in a pair of free throws as Dallas assumed an 89-82 lead with 1:14 remaining in the game.
Mayo drilled a three-pointer to slice the Dallas lead to 81-79 with 3:34, then turned around and made a hard stare at the Mavs' bench. From there, the Mavs took control of the game down the stretch.
Ellis led the Mavs with 18 points, Nowitzki scored 16, Shawn Marion added 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Vince Carter scored 13 points. Mayo paced the Bucks with 28 points and Caron Butler scored 19.
