DALLAS -- There were times during rookie point guard Shane Larkin's debut with the Dallas Mavericks on Monday that he was on the court at the same time with rookie point guard Gal Mekel.
Is that an experiment coach Rick Carlisle envisioned?
"I don’t know what I envisioned,'' Carlisle said after Tuesday's practice. "I envisioned whoever earns the minutes playing, that’s what I envisioned.
"Right now we’re looking for some help at the guard position to alleviate (Monta) Ellis’ minutes. So I’m open to anything.''
Ellis has been the Mavs' main playmaker when starting point guard Jose Calderon goes to the bench. Mekel runs the offense some, but has been too inconsistent.
Larkin showed a spark in his first game Monday against Philadelphia, and admittedly was lost at times on the court. And Devin Harris is still on the mend nursing that surgically repaired toe on his left foot.
Ellis is seventh in the NBA in minutes played at 37.5 per game. It's not a Top 10 list Carlisle wants any of his players on.
