DALLAS -- Dirk Nowitzki had a really hot hand Friday night.
The Dallas Mavericks' 11-time All-Star forward made 10 of his first 16 field goals against the Toronto Raptors and was well on his way to having a really big night. Then, Nowitzki admitted that he kind of ran out of gas while missing his final six shots as the Mavs fell to the Raptors in stunning fashion, 109-108, in overtime at American Airlines Center.
When Nowitzki entered the game with 3:29 remaining in the third quarter, he never left again. That means he played the final 20:39 without taking a break.
"It was a long stretch there starting already in the third quarter,'' Nowitzki said. "But it is what it is.''
Nowitzki missed a 13-foot turnaround with under one second left which would have given the Mavs the victory in regulation play. Then he missed all three of his shots in overtime, including a three-pointer and an 11-footer with under a minute left and the Mavs down by one point.
"I've got to make that last turnaround,'' Nowitzki said. "I thought I got fouled twice on some shots where they hit my elbow -- the one I shot an airball but didn’t get the call, complained about it -- but there's nothing you can do about those.''
Nowitzki wound up playing a season-high 43 minutes and finished with 22 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
"’I just didn't finish the way I would have loved to,'' Nowitkzi said. "That’s a game we can't lose.'
