WASHINGTON -- On a night when Dirk Nowitzki was hobbled by a sore left ankle, the Dallas Mavericks knew they had Monta Ellis waiting in the wings.
Ellis scored a game-high 23 points Wednesday night and carried the Mavs offensively down the stretch as Dallas rolled to an 87-78 victory over the Washington Wizards at the Verizon Center. In the game's final 2:14, Ellis tallied eight of the Mavs' final 10 points.
"I thought tonight was Monta Ellis' best game with us,'' coach Rick Carlisle said. "He had such great command of the game offensively.
"He was under control, he was finding people. He only had one assist, but he kept making the pass that led to the pass that led to the assist, and he made big plays.''
Ellis also went 6-of-6 from the free throw line down the stretch.
"His string of free throws to end the game was the decisive factor,'' Carlisle said. "He played terrific.''
