DALLAS -- Guard Gal Mekel is busy going through his rehab. But the Dallas Mavericks have no timetable set for his return.
Mekel underwent surgery on his right knee on Jan. 17, and coach Rick Carlisle has no idea when the rookie from Israel will be able to play again.
“He’s on the court shooting and doing some light running and so I would say that he’s on schedule or ahead of schedule,’’ Carlisle said Monday. “I just don’t know what the schedule is.’’
In 30 games this season Mekel averaged 2.4 points and 2.1 assists in 9.6 minutes per game. Meanwhile, Carlisle is hopeful that the torn lateral meniscus which Mekel sustained is now repaired and won't give him any problems moving forward.
“I had a meniscus scope three years ago and Dirk (Nowitzki had a scope (Oct. 19, 2012), and everybody’s a little different as to how they respond,'' Carlisle said. "But so far he’s doing extremely well.
"With him it’s going to be trying to get him from doing too much too soon.’’
Whenever Mekel returns, he'll find out that the Mavs' backcourt has gotten a bit crowded now that Devin Harris has been back for five games since undergoing offseason surgery on his left foot.
