WASHINGTON -- When Dirk Nowitzki limped off the Verizon Center court less than a minute into Wednesday's game, he realized this was one of those been there, done that moments.
Nowitzki rolled his left ankle on a freak play and left the game with the contest just 54 seconds old.
“I stepped back and the shot-clock was going low and I saw Jose (Calderon’s) guy coming over and I jumped and passed it up and as I landed I just landed on (Bradley) Beal,'' Nowitzki said. "Beal had his feet underneath and I just rolled my left ankle for probably the 200th time in my career.''
After getting his ankle re-taped, Nowitzki returned with 7:20 left in the first quarter. But he shot just 3-of-14 from the field, scored a season-low nine points and admitted that his sore ankle hampered his play.
“I didn’t get any elevation on my jumper, but I was an expensive decoy today,'' Nowitzki said. "I was trying to just spread the floor for the guys and if I had a shot, shoot it, if not, move it.’’
