MEMPHIS -- Because Chicago and Toronto both lost their final regular season game Wednesday, the Dallas Mavericks finally were able to pay off their debt in the woeful Lamar Odom deal.
The pick from the 2011 trade with the Los Angeles Lakers -- the Lakers traded it to Housotn, who traded it to Okalhoma City -- is now the sole property of the Thunder in the June NBA Draft.
In order to rid themselves of the pick this season the Mavs needed to finish with one of the Top 10-best records in the NBA, since the pick was Top 20-protected through the year 2017. The Mavs desperately wanted to put this issue in their rearview mirror, and they were able to accomplish that Wednesday thanks to losses by the Bulls and Raptors.
“I’d rather just get it over with,” owner Mark Cuban said. “I'm fine just getting it out of the way so it’s no longer over our head or an issue.”
