DALLAS -- A blockbuster deal which will bring beloved center Tyson Chandler back to the Dallas Mavericks will likely be completed today, a source told the Star-Telegram.
The Mavs are on the verge of obtaining Chandler and point guard Raymon Felton from the New York Knicks for Jose Calderon, Samuel Dalembert, Shane Larkin, Wayne Ellington and a second-round draft pick. The proposed trade was first reported by ESPN.
Chandler was the cornerstone on defense when the Mavs captured the 2011 NBA title and never wanted to leave Dallas. But when the Mavs failed to meet his free agent demands following the 2010-'11 season, Chandler signed a four-year, $60 million contract with the Knicks.
The acquisition of Chandler could help the Mavs in their hot pursuit of free agent small forward Carmelo Anthony, who was a teammate of Chandler's in New York over the past three years. Anthony is expected to visit Dallas, Chicago and Houston when free agency starts on Tuesday.
The Mavs have about $26.5 million of cap space available, while the salary cap is projected to be at $63.2 million.
