DALLAS – In due time, Tyson Chandler plans to try and convince Carmelo Anthony that he needs to sign a free agent contract with the Dallas Mavericks.
But now, Chandler said, is not the time.
"I don’t know if I’ll reach out at this time,'' Chandler said. "I know how it is -- everybody is kind of blowing your phone up.
"As athletes, from one athlete to another, we kind of respect guys’ time in free agency because they understand the decision. But when they come to you, when he comes to Dallas or what have you, that’s when you have the opportunity to answer any questions as needed because that’s what a player wants. But as far as outside of that, I’ll give him and his family space, because ultimately at the end of the day that’s who he’s going to sit down with, his inner circle, and make the decision. No outside influences, I’m sure, are going to be in that decision-making.''
Chandler and Anthony were New York Knick teammates the past three seasons. The Mavs obtained Chandler in a trade this past Wednesday that involved six players and two draft picks.
Anthony, meanwhile, plans to visit the Mavs, Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls before making a decision on his future.
